Marvin Window Replacement To Listed Building In Somerset

When the owner of this property wanted to replace her UPVC sliding sash windows with authentic solid wood, she was referred to Marvin Architectural.
This project was particularly challenging: the property is situated in a conservation area, and is a locally listed building which meant any window replacement would have to be authorised by the council and conservation officer.

However the clients brief was simple; remove the existing UPVC windows and bring the house back to its former glory by historically replicating the original sliding sash windows whilst still offering an energy efficient solution.  Marvin Architectural has many years of experience in the sympathetic replacement of windows and doors in conservation areas and listed buildings, therefore this brief was not a problem. As the client had no architectural drawings or window schedules, Marvin Architectural offered a turn key service.

This involved organising design consultations with the client to understand her exact window needs. Marvin Architectural's Technical Department provided her with detailed shop drawings and installation details. The Marvin Architectural surveyor then carried out a full site survey to confirm sizing and installation procedures.
Further consultations between the client and Marvin ensured the window replacement solution being offered met the client’s needs and expectations. However, before manufacturing could proceed, approval from the conservation officer had to be gained.

Marvin Architectural proposed to replace the client’s UPVC windows with Marvin’s double glazed Solid Wood Sliding Sash Windows.
These were offered with narrow 5/8” glazing bars and factory finished in white internally and externally to replicate the original Georgian style of the property as well as to remain in keeping with the neighbouring properties.
The initial ruling from the conservation officer was that the windows should be replaced with single glazing. Therefore the next step for Marvin Architectural and the client was to meet with the conservation officer and put forward the suggested double glazed window replacement solution.

Through meetings with the conservation officers and by presenting further architectural drawings and sample windows, the client appealed the conservation officer's single glazing decision. The ruling was successfully overturned and the replacement of the windows with high performance double glazed sliding sash windows as proposed by Marvin Architectural could begin.
In fact, the local council were so impressed with Marvin Windows and Doors they commented: "We would recommend them to other home owners wishing to replace their windows."
